Buddha
India, probably Bihar; late 6th century
Copper alloy

This bronze sculpture is a rare and important example from eastern India, a region that played an important role in the development of South Asian Buddhist thought and imagery. The Buddha raises his right hand in the gesture of reassurance. He wears the traditional garments of a monk: two large rectangular pieces of cloth, one wrapped around his waist, the other draped over his shoulders. The two layers appear where the hem line falls at different levels.
