Two
Bowls
China,
Shaanxi Province; Jin period, mid-12th century
Porcelain with carved and combed design under glaze (Yaozhou ware)
As
with many 12th-century mass-produced ceramics, the carved blossoms
in the interior of these bowls have been quickly sketched and
a comb used to create the wave design. The green glaze, here with
olive tones, indicates experimentation with iron coloring pigments
that goes back to early Chinese history. Jade, with its range
of colors, may have inspired this ceramic quest.
