Tea
Bowl
China,
Fujian Province; Southern Song period, 12th - 13th century
Porcelain with glaze with iron "hare's fur" and painted with overglaze
iron brown slip, the rim bound with silver (Jian ware)
The
striking decoration of this bowl typifies the sophisticated technology
used by potters in China during the 11th to the 13th centuries.
The iron used in the composition of its glaze rose to the surface
during the firing process creating the "hare's fur" design. Five-petaled
plum blossoms were painted on top. Traveling monks brought Jian
wares from south China to Japan, where they became extremely popular
and influential.
