China,
Jiangxi Province, Southern Song period, 13th century
Porcelain with carved and combed decoration under glaze (Qingbai
ware)
The
name of these wares comes from the limpid
colors of their translucent glazes: Qingbai, meaning "blue-white,"
and Yingqing, "shadow-blue." Qingbai wares were manufactured at
several sites in Jiangxi Province, often for export, over a long
period of time. Lotus, peony, iris, and mallow sprays are carved
against a background of combed patterns on the body of this jar,
whose bulbous shape is unusual for Qingbai wares.
