Bottle
China,
Jiangxi province; Qing period, Yongzheng era, 1723-1735
Porcelain painted with overglaze enamels (Jingdezhen ware)
The combination of beautiful shapes, refined bodies, sophisticated
colors, and elegant painting, which spurred fascination with and
desire for these ceramics in the West, is characteristic of Qing
period porcelains. The French classified these wares, describing
porcelains such as this bottle with its opaque pink enamel as
"famille rose." The Chinese call opaque enamels "foreign" or "soft
colors", distinct from the translucent unshaded "hard colors"
of traditional Chinese enamels. This vase is decorated with images
of peaches, pomegranates, loquats, and other auspicious motifs.
