Jar
Japan,
Saga Prefecture; Edo period, about 1670 - 1690
Porcelain painted with underglaze cobalt blue (Arita ware, Kakiemon
style)
The names of Japanese porcelains often come from the styles and
colors used in their decoration. Kakiemon is named Sakaida Kakiemon
(active mid to late 17th century) for the artisan credited with
this type of decoration. The plum blossoms and chrysanthemums
decorating this jar are flowers of spring and fall, seasons particularly
appreciated for their transitory beauty.
