Bodhisattva
Avalokiteshvara
Western
Tibet; 15th - 16th century
Copper alloy
Gift from The Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller Fund
Although made some 700 years after the Nepali example in the exhibition,
this Tibetan statue of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion,
shares many features with the earlier work as artists continued
to follow sacred canons of proportion and appearance. Each figure
is depicted wearing a belted skirt-like garment with a sacred
thread draped over his left shoulder and a small seated Buddha
in his headdress. The strap tied around the waist and right leg
of this seated Avalokiteshvara helped maintain position during
lengthy meditation practices.
