Male
Figure
Cambodia;
Angkor period, Baphuon style, 11th century
Sandstone
Gift of Arthur Ross
The immense and richly decorated temple mountain of Baphuon was
built by the Khmer people at their capital at Angkor in modern
Cambodia between about 1010 and 1080. Both gods and royalty were
sculpted in the manner of this serene-faced youth with its smooth
rounded body, diaphanous garments, and carefully textured ornaments.
In comparison, the other male figure from Angkor in the Baphuon
style in the exhibition has a longer torso and more elaborately
detailed drapery.
