Carved
Rectangular Red Sandstone Screen
India, Mughal, 17th century
Mottled red sandstone
Gift of Arthur Ross
This work in mottled red sandstone is a carved fragment from an
architectural wall facing. The crisp condition of the carving
suggests it was situated in a part of the building that was sheltered
from the softening and pitting effects of wind and rain. Floral
motifs proliferated during the Mughal period in India; ranging
from naturalistic to highly stylized depictions, such motifs are
found in textiles and other decorative objects, as well as in
paintings and architectural ornaments. In this fragment, panels
of flowering lily plants flank a bowl of flowers placed within
a cartouche, which itself echoes the shape of the petaled forms
and is further decorated with flat, floral bosses.
