Pillow
in the Shape of a Drum
Japan,
Saga Prefecture, Edo period, 18th century
Porcelain painted with underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze enamels
with traces of gold Arita ware, Imari type
While sleeping on a ceramic pillow may seem a challenge to those
accustomed to softer support, the advantage in preserving an elaborate
coiffure such as those worn by women in Edo Japan will be quickly
appreciated. This drum-shaped pillow is decorated with white cherry
blossoms in reserve against a red ground. Dense pattern, saturated
overglaze color, and a blue-gray tinge to the white of the porcelain
body are the marks of the Imari style.
