Angkor period, Baphuon style, third quarter 11th century
Sandstone
The sculptor has carved the garments of this image, whose identity
remains unknown, in great detail. The elegant vertical pleats
of the sampot, a short skirt-like garment, are more numerous than
those of earlier sculptures. Delicate eight-petaled flowers are
incised into the excess folds on the left thigh, and jeweled pendants
hang from the low-slung belt with its fine patterns that seem
to represent metal rather than cloth. Both royalty and guardians
wore belts such as this.
