Kendi
(Spouted Jar)
Thailand;
15th - 16th century
Porcelain with incised design under glaze (Si Satchanalai ware)
Historically used for pouring libations in Buddhist ceremonies,
ceramic and bronze kendi are still used as drinking vessels in
Indonesia today. Vessels of this type were produced in both China
and Southeast Asia, primarily for export to Indonesia and the
Philippines and come in many forms. Kendi are generally distinguished
by their spherical bodies and a neck that serves both as a handle
and as a means to fill the vessel. The dusty green glaze here
reflects the popularity of greenwares throughout the trade network
that connected China and Southeast Asia.
