A Graphic Odyssey: Romare Bearden as Printmaker

September 6 - October 24, 1996

Known for his paintings and collages, in the last fifteen years of his life Romare Bearden produced a great variety of prints, which are assembled for the first time in this exhibition curated by Gail Gelburd and Alex Rosenberg. The works recall the artist's experience growing up in the South, his studies in Paris, his participation in the Harlem Renaissance, and feature his reinterpretation of ancient myths, traditional rituals, and personal symbolism, while "revealing the poety intrinsic to modern American life." A part of the exhibition will be displayed concurrently at Philadelphia's Brandywine Workshop.

The Bearden Project: Students from local high schools participated in printmaking workshops with Penn professor, Hitoshi Nakazato.
