Mapping
the Pacific Coast: Coronado to Lewis and Clark
The Quivira Collection
September
24, 2005—January 9, 2006
Early
maps and prints, dating from 1544 to 1801, illustrate the discoveries
and fantasies that led up to Jefferson’s decision 200 years
ago to commission the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Pacific
Ocean. From the collection of Henry Wendt, in cooperation with the
Sonoma County Museum, Santa Rosa, California.
The name Quivira is derived from many of the maps in this exhibition. A belief in this legendary land of riches encouraged much of the exploration of the West Coast. Today, Quivira is a small family-owned estate winery in the heart of Sonoma County’s celebrated Dry Creek Valley. Open daily, except major holidays, from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. 4900 West Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg, CA 95448. Tel 7070-431-8333
