Graduate Student Housing

University housing is plentiful; on-campus housing is chosen by approximately 800 graduate students. Apartments and single rooms are available for graduate students and their households. All rooms and apartments are furnished and seasonally air-conditioned. The graduate residences offer prime campus locations that are convenient to classes and University resources such as libraries and recreational facilities. All units are wired with ResNet which provides access to high-speed Ethernet connections. Students can select nine-month, eleven-month, or year-round housing.

In addition, off campus housing provides a wide range of housing options in terms of location, convenience, type, condition of rental unit, and size. Rental costs vary accordingly. One way of reducing housing costs is to share an apartment or a house, an option that is chosen by a significant number of students. University City, the area adjacent to Penn's campus on the west, and Center City, the area adjacent to the east, have traditionally been home to many Penn affiliates: faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduates. The housing stock of University City and Center City can accommodate many different life-styles and budgets. Many spacious, well- preserved Victorian homes with yard space and beautiful gardens, townhouses, and apartment buildings are reasonably priced and within walking distance from campus. The University offers free bus and escort services to Penn affiliates who live in these areas. Other areas where graduate students frequently choose to live include the Art Museum area, the Main Line, Delaware County, City Line, Overbrook, Montgomery County, Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill. As a first step in searching for off campus housing, students should visit Philadelphia and explore its neighborhoods.
