Two Street Crimes
At presstime, Penn Police Detective Tom King confirmed press accounts
of two violent incidents on campus streets, and said University detectives
are cooperating in the Philadelphia Police investigations now under way:
- Friday outside the 38th-Street Wawa, Broderick Barnville, a 31-year-old
Physical Plant employee, was stabbed in the arm by a suspect whose image
was caught on videotape--but no arrest can yet be confirmed. Mr. Barnville
was released Saturday from HUP where he was taken for surgery on a severed
artery.
- Sunday outside the Palestra, in a shooting among fans of two high school
teams that had competed for the Philadelphiaic League championship, one
22-year-old visitor was killed and two wounded. A fourth victim--Penn student
John La Bombard--was hit by a stray bullet as he worked on an environmental
design project inside the Blauhaus. The bullet pierced the wooden wall
of the temporary structure at 33rd and Chestnut, striking Mr. La Bombard's
left leg. The 21-year-old senior remained hospitalized over the weekend.
No arrests have been reported.
