Home Buyers Housing Fair: April 7

The Office of Community Housing, which administers the Guaranteed Mortgage Program for Penn faculty and staff, will hold its annual Home Buyers Housing Fair on Wednesday, April 7, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Faculty Club's Alumni Hall. Refreshments will be served.

Faculty and staff can meet bankers, realtors, insurance brokers and more. Employees can also secure their own personal credit report for $2, and those who complete a housing survey are eligible for prizes. More information: Community Housing, 573-9725 or 898-7422.

University City Saturday: Community Tours April 17

Houses in the near-campus community will be on view in the eighth annual University City Saturday, April 17. The hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the information center is in the auditorium of St. Francis de Sales, 917 S. 47th St.

University City Saturday allows prospective home buyers to meet with representatives of organizations committed to the area and learn exactly what the community has to offer. Information will be available from many of University City's neighborhood associations, schools and churches. There will also be representatives from different banks and mortgage companies.

Non-buying visitors--architecture buffs, home renovators in search of ideas, and those who simply want to know the neighborhood west of 40th Street--are also welcome. More information: University City Promotions, 552-8518.

'Best' for the Neighborhood

The March 17 Philadelphia Weekly's "1999 Best and Worst" list says the Best Urban Alternative to Suburban Living is: "UNIVERSITY CITY: Huge, exquisitely detailed Victorian homes can be had for the cost of a Center City trinity in America's original streetcar suburb. If wide, tree-lined streets, friendly neighbors and a plethora of ethnic restaurants don't entice you, how about the new Sansom Common shopping district, the imminent Sundance theater and the high-tech supermarket being built at 40th and Walnut? Have kids? Penn is building and subsidizing a 'demonstration' school in Spruce Hill. A pretty good trade-off for having to mingle with those Penn kids."
