Dr. Robert Barchi's report to the Trustees Stated Meeting in June included the announcement of the Fels Center appointment and of the selection of an ICA director, Claudia Gould of New York's Artists Space (to be published in September).
Three academic program changes were introduced by Provost Barchi and passed by the Trustees:
Cancer Biology: A basic science Department of Cancer Biology is established in the School of Medicine in association with the formation of the Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute, "to provide a focus for investigators interested in basic biological issues using cancer as a model system as well as to centralize and coordinate teaching efforts in cancer biology," the Intention read.
Folklore & Folklife: The SAS department is closed, effective July 1, but the motion adds that "The closure of the Department does not signal the end of Folklore studies at the University" (see related story and resolution).
Chemical Education: A master of chemical education
degree is authorized for SAS, designed in cooperation with faculty of GSE
and with local secondary school teachers and administrators. The program
for certified teachers will be administered by the Department of Chemistry,
and eight of its ten required course units will focus on content in chemistry,
with two in pedagogy-but all courses will involve collaboration with faculty
from GSE, aimed at helping the teachers integrate the material into their
