Dr. Alvin H. Johnson, associate professor emeritus of music, died on
March 17 at the age of 85. Dr. Johnson was at Penn from 1962 until his retirement
in 1982. Dr. Johnson was also director of graduate studies for music from
1961 till 1967.
Dr. Johnson became the executive director of the American Musicological
Society in 1978 a position he held until 1993. He also taught at Ohio State
and Yale where he co-authored The Art of Music.
A 1936 graduate of the University of Minnesota. He was also a member
of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra where he played French horn. Dr. Johnson
earned his doctorate from Yale in 1954.
He is survived by two sons, David S. and Timothy A.; a daughter, Wendy
Schlesinger; two brothers; three sisters; and four grandchildren. A musical
memorial at Penn is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions
may be made to the AMS 50 Fellowship Fund, American Musicological Society,
