Performance and Staff Development Program

In support of the University's Agenda for Excellence and to promote effective management practices, it is vital that all supervisors and managers provide staff with the appropriate support, guidance, and feedback to enhance their job understanding, professional development and productivity. All eligible regular staff members should receive written feedback about their overall performance at least once a year. This written feedback should support the merit increase and other compensation decisions made for staff. The University's Performance and Staff Development Program (performance appraisal process) supports this effort by:

  • providing staff with documented feedback on their performance and accomplishments during the appraisal cycle;
  • assisting staff in understanding their job responsibilities and performance expectations and supervisor's goals and expectations for the upcoming appraisal cycle;
  • identifying competencies that are vital to the staff member's success in the current position and/or will enhance his or her professional development.

The Performance and Staff Development Program materials for the 2001 appraisal cycle are now available online at the Division of Human Resources web site (www.hr.upenn.edu). The basic format for the program remains the same. However, this year, there are three (3) online alternate formats to use in lieu of completing the standard Performance and Staff Development Plan. These formats include the short form, memorandum and letter templates.

The Division of Human Resources is available to provide supervisors and staff with information, assistance, and training on the Performance and Staff Development Program. Please contact Division of Human Resources, Staff and Labor Relations at (215) 898-6093 or access the Human Resources web site for information or assistance.
