Speaking Out

Mayhaps a Museum of Art Mailing

I was disappointed to see a passage in Jerry Briggs' letter (Privacy on Auction Block) which asserts that the Friends of the Library exchanged its mailing list with a non-Penn organization. The Friends does not exchange lists with other non-profits, no matter how worthy. I believe Mr. Briggs is referring to a mailing that he received from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, inviting him to a program being jointly sponsored by the Friends and the PMA. For that invitation--and that invitation only--we provided PMA with a set of labels so that they could include the Friends in their mailing. I explained this to Mr. Briggs when he raised the question, many months ago. A list "exchange" involves trading names with other groups, and no such exchange was made or intended.
