Deaths
At
press time, Almanac learned of the deaths of
two members of the Penn community. (Full obituaries
will appear in the next issue.)
Dr.
Charles Lee, emeritus professor of English,
died on November 20 at the age of 89. Dr. Lee
taught journalism, creative writing, writing
non-fiction and review and criticism; he was
also one of Almanac's earliest editors,
serving from December 1955 until May 1959, with
Bruce Montgomery as managing editor. They jointly
exhibited their paintings at the Faculty Club
six times from 1985-1998. A memorial service
will be held at the Annenberg Center on December
13, 3-5 p.m.
Dr.
Rupert Billingham, former chair of the department
of Medical Genetics from 1965 to 1971, died on
November 16 at the age of 71 from complications
of Parkinson's disease. Dr. Billingham, a basic
scientist, was interested in the application
of transplantation to human disease. He was central
to the development of a kidney transplant program
at Penn in 1966. A memorial service will be held
on December 3 on Martha's Vineyard, MA.
