Winning
the WTC Competition: Penn Architects
The
plan chosen for the World Trade Center (WTC) site, was designed
by Penn architects Daniel Libeskind, the Paul Philippe Cret
Professor of Architecture and principal architect of Studio
Daniel Libeskind, and Dr. Gary Hack, dean and Paley Professor,
GSFA and chairman of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission.

Dr.
Jonathan M. Smith has been appointed the first incumbent of
the Olga and Alberico Pompa Professorship of Engineering and
Applied Science. Dr. Smith's research is centered on advanced
computer communications networks and secure distributed computing
systems. |
Departure
of Director of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity
Effective
March 1, Valerie Hayes, Executive Director for the Office of
Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Programs, resigned
her position at Penn to become the Director of the Equal Opportunity
Office and Special Advisor to the Provost at Yale University.

$1.5
Million NSF Grant: Math
Schools
in West Philadelphia will be supported by a $1.5 million grant
from the National Science Foundation to boost their mathematics
and science curricula in grades K-12. |
$2 Million
Gift: Jerry Lee Center
The
Jerry Lee
Criminology Center has received a $2 million gift
from its namesake Jerry Lee, president of WBEB 101.1 FM radio
station. |
