Blood Drive: Today at Library

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive today, Tuesday, January 13, from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in the Dietrich Reading Room of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library. Right now, there is a critical need for blood, so if you are eligible to donate, please do so. If you have any questions about eligibility, check out the American Red Cross, website, www.pleasegiveblood.org.

A reminder for first-time donors:  you must weigh at least 110 pounds. You will want to "iron-up' about a week before donation by eating foods rich in iron, such as poultry, red meat, green leafy vegetables or raisins. Increase your intake of fluids (they ask you to double it) the day before donation. And please, eat a meal before you donate (breakfast, lunch--not just a carrot or a banana). If you have received a tattoo within the last year, you are not eligible to donate. You cannot be taking an antibiotic currently to donate blood. If you have traveled outside the U.S. recently for more than three months, or have any other questions about donation, you can call me (215) 451-4363.

Try the new online registration at, www.Penn.givesblood.org, so please sign up. Walk-ins are also welcome.

-- Evalyn B. Gelhaus, Serials Dept., Van Pelt-Dietrich Library
