Human Resources: May Programs

The Division of Human Resources provides many opportunities for both professional and personal development. We encourage you to take advantage of the upcoming programs listed below. Pre-registration is required for all Learning and Education and Quality of Work Life programs; register via the online Course Catalog on the Human Resources website. Learning and Education Programs

Learn valuable skills through American Management Association (AMA) programs, Brown Bag Matinees, Career Focus Brown Bags, and other programs.  For questions  call (215) 898-3400 or visit www.hr.upenn.edu/learning.

May 19,  noon-1 p.m.; Brown Bag Matinee--Straight Talking; this program teaches that the value of assertive behavior is that managers can be honest with themselves and others, without emotion.

May 21, noon-1 p.m.; Career Focus Brown Bag--Closing the Gap; the "gap" refers to the communication gap that often occurs because of differences in the ways men and women communicate. Recognizing and understanding these differences will make for more effective communication in the work place.

May 26 and May 27, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; $50; Teams: Who, What, When, Why & How; teams are more than simply a group of people working together. They can be an enormously effective way to create synergy and produce outstanding results.

Quality of Work Life Programs  

Human Resources, in collaboration with Penn Behavioral Health (the University's Employee Assistance Program and Work & Family Services provider) and Independence Blue Cross, presents a free series of workshops to enhance your professional and/or personal well-being.  Don't forget to pre-register online at www.hr.upenn.edu/quality/workshop.asp. Please feel free to bring a 'brown bag' lunch.

May 13, 11:30 a.m.-1p.m.; Tips for Working with Team Members for Better Results; learn how to develop goals of team building, how to initiate team building and ways to identify potential problems while teambuilding.

May 20, noon-1p.m.; Safe Summer Fun Outdoors; this popular seasonal program covers ways to combat many of the hazards of the summer months including skin cancer, lyme disease, heat related illnesses, ticks and other pests, skin rashes and allergies.

May 27, 11:30 a.m.-1p.m.; Managing for Better Balance at Work and Home;in this workshop, participants will explore the characteristics of balance in their organizational and personal lives in the context of family and career development.

May 11, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Maximizing Your Tax-Deferred Savings Opportunities - presented by TIAA-CREF; learn how to take full advantage of your retirement plans as retirement experts discuss Internal Revenue Service limits and after-tax savings vehicles.

May 11, 1-2 p.m.; Retirement Distribution Flexibilities - presented by TIAA-CREF; learn about planning your retirement income as experts from TIAA-CREF review their decision guidance philosophy and retirement income flexibilities.

May 12, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Penn's Tax-Deferred Retirement Plan Overview - presented by The Vanguard Group; understand the benefits and options available when you participate in the University's Tax-Deferred Retirement plan.

May 12, 1-2 p.m.; Getting Ahead: How to Get Out of Debt and Build Wealth--presented by The Vanguard Group; discover how to take control of your finances by identifying personal financial goals, developing a spending plan, and setting realistic strategies for paying off debt.

May 13, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; The Basics: Making Investments Easy - presented by The Vanguard Group; understand the basic investment terms, identify your investment goals, and assess your personal risk tolerance.

May 13, 1-2 p.m. Your Goal: Getting Ready to Retire--presented by The Vanguard Group; learn how to make smart choices about your retirement plan distributions as experts from The Vanguard Group discuss making your retirement savings last and how to invest for and during retirement.
