Sioe Liong/ First Pacific Co. Professor of Statistics:
Andreas Buja has been designated the Liem Sioe Liong/First
Pacific Company Professor of Statistics, effective
July 1, 2003. Dr. Buja has been with Wharton since 2002, and had previous appointments at the
University of Washington, Seattle, and Stanford University.
He received his Ph.D. in mathematics and statistics
in 1980 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology,
Buja's research involves multivariate statistics,
nonparametric statistics, and data visualization.
He served as editor of the Journal of Computational
and Graphical Statistics from 1997-2001, and
then as its advisory editor from 2001 to the present.
His recent publications include "Visualization Methodology
for Multidimensional Scaling," and "Journal of Computational
and Graphical Statistics."
Liem Sioe Liong/First Pacific Company Professorship
was awarded to the Wharton School in 1996 by Anthony
Salim, president and CEO of the Salim Group, one
of the largest Indonesian conglomerates, and its
associated Hong Kong based First Pacific Company.
The professorship is named for Mr. Salim's father,
Liem Sioe Liong who was the key in building the First
Pacific Company, and the professorship is symbolic
for the growing role of globalization in the Asian
