Veiled Woman with Pearls, photograph taken by Antoin Sevruguin. Sevruguin was the first Iranian photographer to focus on the aesthetic, as well as the documentary, potential of photography. Images like this haunting portrait brought a new artistry to turn-of-the-century Iranian photography.

Barber Dying Nasir al-din Shah's Mustache, photograph taken by Antoin Sevruguin. In addition to taking official portraits of royalty, Sevruguin had the privilege of witnessing more intimate moments, such as here.

The Luggage Bearers. As ethnographer, Sevruguin turned his attention to various occupations in Iran, such as these luggage bearers posed outside in an open square. The image was part of his series on transportation.
