GSE’s Pre-Doctoral Training Program Seeks Applicants
April 3, 2007, Volume 53, No. 28

Applications are currently being accepted by Penn GSE’s Pre-Doctoral Training Program in Interdisciplinary Methods for Field-based Research in Education.

The program, which is supported by the Institute of Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to support and enhance the Ph.D. training of students committed to careers in applied, field-based education research.

Ph.D. students enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania are eligible to apply to the program. The program is geared toward those Ph.D. students who have an interest in and commitment to furthering the production of scientifically rigorous research on the effectiveness of interventions to improve academic and social outcomes for children and youth. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Fellows should be committed to becoming a scholar of and/or active contributor to field-based researcher in education. Fellows are expected to pursue academic coursework in a discipline–such as economics, sociology, political science, psychology, and demography–and in education. Students may have matriculated in the Ph.D. within the GSE or in another academic department within Penn. All fellows must agree to complete foundational coursework in both an education and an academic discipline. It is expected that the foundations requirements will consist of a minimum of two courses in education and two courses in the selected academic discipline.

In addition, Fellows participate in the ongoing workshops and seminars organized by the program and contribute to the design and conduct of collaborative field-based projects.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and the deadline for summer and fall acceptance is May 15, 2007. Applicants should fill out an application form and return it, with a copy of their transcript and two letters of recommendation, at least one from their advisor or faculty sponsor from their home department, to: IES Pre-Doctoral Training Program Office, Attn: Laura Kitson, Graduate School of Education, 4th floor, 3700 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.

Program information is at www.gse.upenn.edu/pimfer/guideline.html. An application form is available at: www.gse.upenn.edu/pimfer/docs/Penn%20IES%20Predoc%20Application%20form.pdf.
