The Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT) and Institute for Medicine and Engineering (IME) announce a new Translational Inter-School Initiative.
Translational research occupies the spectrum from lab bench proof-of-principle to pre-clinical testing and bedside implementation. There is a particular need for Translational Engineering Research to intensify the development of innovative ideas, technology, devices, and engineering-based applications along the axis of investigation and development, from design and proof-of-concept to clinical testing. Research interactions between faculty of the Medical School/Hospital System (SOM/HUP) and quantitative departments in the School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) can be enhanced by support of advanced research fellowships co-mentored by collaborating faculty. Appropriate collaborative applications from the departments of Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) will also be considered. The Translational Engineering Fellowships will support two years of Postdoctoral research directed to these objectives.
Translational Engineering Fellows will be Postdoctoral Fellows who pursue interdisciplinary, engineering-intensive translational research under the direction of collaborative mentors in two Schools, one of which must be the School of Medicine. Either mentor may be the primary advisor or they may be co-equal.
The program will support each Postdoctoral Fellow (NIH scale and medical insurance) for two years. In addition, up to $15,000/year will be provided to each research project.
Two Fellowships will be awarded starting July 1, 2007, for two years (with progress review at end of year 1).
Translational Engineering Fellows would be eligible to take the new Masters in Translational Research (MTR) degree of ITMAT should they wish to do so.
Deadline for applications: 5 p.m. Friday, May 4. Awards will be announced by June 1 normally for a July start date.

Electronic Applications (pdf files) should contain:
• The nomination of a current or prospective postdoctoral fellow in a letter signed by the collaborating faculty.
• Nominee’s CV, research statement and a statement of research relevance to translational medicine/engineering.
• The collaboration of two investigators from different Schools as Co-Mentors; one must be in the School of Medicine/CHOP. It is permissible (and in some cases highly desirable) that faculty engaged principally in clinical work may collaborate with an investigator in another School.
• The research project (see below).
• A clear statement of the translational potential of the project.
• A two page NIH-style biosketch of each collaborating faculty advisor.
• A list of current and pending research support of the collaborating faculty.

The project section of the application is limited to a maximum of 5 pages plus literature citations. Sections to be covered are:
• Introduction/Specific Aims
• Background/Significance
• Preliminary Data (optional)–“out-of-the-box” thinking based on sound reasoning is encouraged
• Research Design and Methods
The component of the award that represents project funds cannot support faculty salary, travel, or supplement the Postdoctoral stipend.
Studies proposing human or animal studies must comply with university procedures, but submission to and approval by IACUC and IRB Committees is not required at the time of Fellowship submission. |
