Managing Cross-Cultural Communication in a Global Penn Community
Penn is a multicultural institution, with students, faculty and staff from all over the world.  This makes for a very diverse, vibrant community–and at times, a rather confusing one. The Division of Human Resources and the Office of International Programs (OIP) are teaming up to provide training on enhancing communication in the cross-cultural workplace. Whether you’re an international scholar/staff member or someone who works closely with one, we hope this program will help you bridge the cultural gap.  Sessions will be led by Dr. Rodolfo Altamirano, trained cross-cultural educator, conflict mediator, former international student/scholar, and current Director of International Student & Scholar Services at Penn, and Dr. Patricia Tsao, an international scholar with 20 years experience working and managing in the academic research environment in the U.S. For more information or to register, visit the online Course Catalog at www.hr.upenn.edu or call (215) 898-3400.

Topics will include how values, perceptions, and expectations differ between cultures; how to manage conflicts and problems with international scholars/staff; what you need to know about the workplace dynamics; behaviors and practices in international cultures; and practical tips for working with international staff.

For International Scholars and Staff: What You Need to Know to Be Successful in the Penn Workplace;
October 5; 9 a.m. to noon; free. This session will address how to succeed in the cross-cultural workplace. Learn more about the culture of the Penn workplace and other topics, including: practical tips and advice on avoiding miscommunications and misunderstandings in the workplace; how to network and take advantage of opportunities at Penn; working effectively in a multi-cultural setting; a better understanding of how academic departmental systems work; how to avoid easy mistakes; and how best to support your supervisor/Principal Investigator.

Nutrition 101: From A to Zinc

You should leave the workshop feeling confident in your knowledge to read and understand food labels, and make proper food choices for overall good health and to decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease. This workshop will be led by Rachel Griehs, clinical dietitian specialist in HUP’s Bariatric Surgery Program.

Supermarket Smarts and Restaurant Readiness;
October 18; noon to 1 p.m.; free. Is your grocery cart filled with colorful vegetables, whole grains, and fresh fish…or is it bogged down with chips, cakes, and the random apple? Are you choosing wisely when you're eating out, or are you accidentally ordering the worst stuff off the menu?  Learn the skills and confidence you need to properly navigate supermarkets and restaurant menus.  You should leave the workshop feeling confident in your ability to food shop more wisely and make better decisions when ordering/eating out. This workshop will be led by Cara Savoian, clinical dietitian from HUP.
