Faculty Senate Executive Committee Actions

The following is published in accordance with the Faculty Senate Rules. Among other purposes, the publication of SEC actions is intended to stimulate discussion among the constituencies and their representatives. Welcome and Introductions. Faculty Senate Chair Larry Gladney welcomed the 2007-2008 Faculty Senate Executive Committee and brief introductions followed.

Chair’s Report. Faculty Senate Chair Larry Gladney presented an overview of the Faculty Senate and its composition:  the Faculty Senate Executive Committee (SEC), the Senate Committees, University Council, and the University Council Committees. Dr. Gladney reported that Faculty Senate Past-Chair Vincent Price accepted the position of Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, leaving a vacancy in the Senate Executive Committee. Dr. Neville Strumpf agreed to serve another term as Past-Chair and Dr. Gladney thanked her for continuing her service.

Past Chair’s Report.  Faculty Senate Past-Chair Neville Strumpf gave an overview to the Executive Committee on the work of the Academic Planning and Budget Committee, Capital Council, and the Trustee Committee on Budget and Finance. 

“Faculty as the moral conscience of the University” dialogue scheduled for the November SEC meeting.  SEC had a thoughtful discussion concerning ideas for the upcoming November meeting featuring a dialogue with Dr. Vincent Price, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and Dr. Andrew Binns, Associate Provost for Education.

FY08 Facilities and Real Estate Priorities.  Anne Papageorge, Vice President for Facilities and Real Estate Management outlined Facilities priorities into three components: Facilities Renewal Needs, Sustainability, and an update on Penn Connects.  Anne Papageorge reported that more detailed information concerning Penn Connects will be forthcoming on the Facilities website. SEC concerns centered on communication, faculty input, and the costs of aging buildings.

Faculty Senate Committee Charges for 2007-08 Committees.  SEC reviewed the proposed committee charges for all the Senate Standing Committees. The charges were unanimously approved with the addition of two new charges.

New Business.  Faculty Senate Chair Larry Gladney stated that he welcomes any suggestions, matters of concern, or ideas, and to please contact him at any time.
