At left: The Song and Dance Ensemble of West Africa crosses nationalistic and ethnic borders to present a unified celebration of West African culture and the many facets these civilizations share. It is the ideal presentation to kick off the 2008-09 Penn Presents African Roots Series, on Sunday, October 12 at 7 p.m. in the Zellerbach Theatre of the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.
Directed by Bamaba Dembele, this group is comprised of traditional West African singers, dancers and musicians from the various cultures of West Africa. The troupe combines the traditional rhythms, instruments, folklore and mythology of nations such as Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Ghana, Benin, The Ivory Coast and Mauritania. Through this they paint a picture of the oral and musical rites of these diverse peoples.
