The University of Pennsylvania Libraries has announced the appointment of David McKnight to the position of Director of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library (RBML).  His responsibilities include ensuring stewardship, management, discovery, and preservation of the collection; and maintaining visibility of the RBML within and outside of the Penn community.Mr. McKnight also currently functions as the Director of the Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image where he oversees daily management, planning, and production of the Library’s scholarly digital collections.

Before Mr. McKnight came to Penn, he headed the Rare Books and Special Collections Division at McGill University Libraries and was the Principal Librarian at McGill’s Humanities and Social Sciences Library.  Mr. McKnight came to Penn in 2006, and in 2008 he was appointed Interim Director of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

“Increasingly, academic libraries are distinguished by their special collections and the digital infrastructure in place that exposes them to scholars and facilitates their use,” said Carton Rogers, Vice Provost and Director of Libraries. “We are very fortunate to have someone like David, who has experience in both the physical and digital realms of rare books and manuscripts.”

Mr. McKnight holds a BA in honours classics and history from McGill University, an MLIS from McGill, and an MA in English from Concordia University.
