Writing Instruments Brigade
PDF
February 9, 2010, Volume 56, No. 21

Business Services is announcing a new program, the Writing Instruments Brigade, which recycles pens, mechanical pencils, markers, etc. and creates a second life for these instruments. Through a process known as “upcycling,” which uses waste in its existing form to create new products, the writing instruments will be turned into fun and innovative new products. All pens, mechanical pencils and markers are acceptable including sharpies, highlighters and dry erase markers. For every writing instrument that Penn recycles, the University will receive two cents ($0.02) which will be designated to the new Green Fund. The program is part of a joint effort between Penn and Sandford, Office Depot and Terracycle.

The program was launched at the 2010 RecycleMania kick-off event on January 25 at Houston Hall. Business Services is now looking for volunteers to become part of the Writing Instruments Brigade and help set up collection points in their offices or departments. It is a great opportunity to support Penn’s sustainability efforts!  For more information on this program, or to volunteer contact JoAnn Murphy, Director of Purchasing, joannmur@upenn.edu.
