Year of Water

Staff members are encouraged to participate in Penn’s River Rescue on Friday, September 24. United By Blue is an organization working with the Office of the Provost and student organizations to present a week-long river clean-up effort. On Friday, PPSA will join the Provost’s Office, The Women’s Center, and Penn Environmental Group in hosting a clean-up event. Vice Provost Andy Binns and a number of PPSA Board Members will be participating. Contests for the weirdest piece of trash collected and other activities will take place. After the clean up, participants will come back to Penn for a fun reception in the Hall of Flags. The schedule:

10:30 a.m.– Welcome Brunch in Houston Hall, Hall of Flags

10:45 a.m. –Bus Loading & Departure from Houston Hall

11:30 a.m.–River Clean Up at Pennypack Park

1:30 p.m.–Bus Departs Clean Up Site & Drop Off at Houston Hall

2 p.m.–Reception in Houston Hall

Register at www.PennsRiverRescue.com

Should staff take vacation time to participate? Staff would need to use vacation time unless their supervisor allows them to participate as a work-related, community building activity. Some staff are taking an “extended lunch break” to participate.

What if I can’t go to the cleanup on Friday? Volunteers are welcome to go to any day’s cleanup regardless of when PPSA is partnering.
What to wear? Clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty and rain boots are suggested. You will not be getting very wet because we are doing the cleanups at low tide and most of the trash will be embedded in the shore.

Do we need to provide anything? No. The gloves, bags and other clean-up materials will be provided by United By Blue.
