|Engaging Students Through Technology Symposium

Engaging Students Through Technology, a symposium for faculty and instructors, will be held on Friday, October 15, from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. It will be hosted by the Libraries’ David B. Weigle Information Commons in conjunction with the School of Arts and Sciences.
We live today in a state of ‘continuous partial attention.’ Instant access to people and information is simultaneously engaging and distracting. New tools break down classroom boundaries and change the nature of college education. This year’s symposium explores the creative ways faculty are integrating technologies into teaching, the challenges they face, and the disruptive nature of mobile technologies in lecture contexts. The day’s program will include faculty presentations, hands-on exploration, and small-group discussions.
10:30 a.m.-noon—Fisher-Bennett Hall 401
Penn faculty members Andrew Lamas, Carol Muller and Ralph Rosen (SAS), Regina Austin (Law), Kris Rabberman (LPS) and Mark Yim (Engineering) will describe how they engage students through strategic use of new technologies and the resulting pedagogical challenges. Topics include video documentaries, visualization tools, Facebook, Google Maps, mobile devices, and online learning communities.
Noon-3 p.m.—David B. Weigle Information Commons, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center
Lunch with symposium presenters followed by concurrent sessions that will provide an opportunity for small-group exploration. Current Penn undergraduates will participate in a panel discussion on how technology helps them learn. Hands-on and discussion sessions will focus on topics including Zotero, iMovie, Google Maps, student-created websites, screen movies and blogs (see the Symposium website, www.wic.library.upenn.edu/wicshops/pennedutech2010.html, for details).
