As the City of Philadelphia plans to reopen the South Street Bridge on Saturday, November 6, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, just down the road at 3260 South Street, will celebrate with a “green” day for visitors: half-price admission to everyone on both sides of the bridge who visits that day without benefit of a car. The first 100 “green” guests receive a sleek metal Penn Museum water bottle (refillable for the trip back home).
“You can walk on over, you can jog on over, ride your bike (helmets, please), take a bike taxi, catch a SEPTA bus, subway, trolley or the regional rail—just come to the Penn Museum in a green and sustainable way, and we’ll welcome you in at half the price of our regular admission to enjoy our galleries and ‘travel the world,’ ” said Richard Hodges, the Williams Director.
Penn Museum is open November 6 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Regular admission donation is $10 for adults; $7 for senior citizens (65 and above); $6 for children (6 to 17) and full-time students with ID; free to Members, PennCard holders, and children 5 and younger. “Green” visitors will enjoy $5 admission; $3.50 for senior citizens, and $3 for children and full-time college students.
Visitors to the “Green and Sustainable Day” need only show their SEPTA return token, weekly or monthly pass, or a bicycle helmet for half-price admission. The Museum has added new bike racks at the main entrance—to complement the racks on the east side of the building. Walkers can show a photo ID/postmarked letter indicating home zip code (all reasonable “walks” will be honored).
A bike taxi from velo-parkcabs, new to Philadelphia, joins in on the celebration: Penn Museum guests can check out a velo-parkcab as it pulls in to the Stoner Courtyard, or take a complementary short ride on South Street (first come, first served), between 1 and 4 p.m. PECO joins with its “Smart Ideas” outreach team, offering information about ways to cut back on home energy use—and save money.
In honor of the day, the Museum will offer an interactive station with an opportunity to explore “Woodland Indians Relationship with Nature” from 2 to 4 p.m. Penn Museum’s new Pepper Mill Café—which features fresh local foods, organic choices and other sustainable options—will join in on the celebration with sustainable lunch and snack options at a 10% discount. In the Museum Shop, Museum eco-tote shopping bags, regularly $3.99 each, will be 20% off, and Museum backpacks, regularly $30, will be $15.
