Philadelphia Writing Project's 25th Anniversary

The Philadelphia Writing Project will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Saturday, October 22, with a day of festivities, culminating with a gala honoring Representative Chaka Fattah and PhilWP founding directors Judy Buchanan and Susan Lytle. The gala dinner will feature a jazz ensemble and readings by teachers who represent the 25-year history of the Philadelphia Writing Project.

Elyse Eidman-Aadahl, director of National Programs and Site Development for the National Writing Project, will deliver the keynote address. The gala will be held at the Inn at Penn at 6 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.gse.upenn.edu/philwp

The gala dinner will cap off the day’s celebration, which begins with a community event at the Penn Museum from 1-4 p.m. Featured events include:

•  Presentations by winners of the 2011 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

•  Remarks by the best-selling author Karen E. Quinones Miller.

•  Work by students in the Moore College of Art Literacy through Photography Project, directed by Elizabeth Gilly.

•  A workshop on literacy and photography.

•  A tour of the Penn Museum’s new Imagine Africa exhibit.

Attendees will also be invited to participate in a writing marathon. The event is free with admission/donation to the Penn Museum.

The Philadelphia Writing Project, located at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, is a site of the National Writing Project. It is a growing network of over 700 teacher consultants who explore literacy, teaching, and learning in all schools, grade levels (pre-K to college), and subjects. A network built upon the contributions of its members, the Philadelphia Writing Project sponsors teacher-led professional development, inquiry communities for educators, and writing opportunities for students and families.
