 Dimitri Islam, L’09, has been named Associate Director of Student Development at Penn Law. His appointment was announced recently by Law’s Dean of Students Gary Clinton.
“Students will benefit enormously from the wealth of teaching and legal experience Dimitri brings to this position,” Mr. Clinton said. “He will be a wonderful resource and colleague to staff and faculty, as well. I am particularly happy to see a motivated young lawyer begin a career in university administration.”
As Associate Director, Mr. Islam will serve as the major staff resource for students planning conferences and events and will work with other Law School administrators on planning student leadership and professionalism activities. Over the next six months, he is expected to work with faculty, staff and students to update and systematize Penn Law’s academic advising program.
In the Student Affairs Office, Mr. Islam will serve as a counselor on academic matters and will have responsibilities in oversight of the Code of Conduct and Responsibility.
Mr. Islam, who earned his JD from Penn Law in 2009, has a long-standing interest in both law and education. After earning his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Chicago, he worked for three years as a history teacher at two Philadelphia-area independent high schools, serving as a mock trial coach and student life advisor. He then enrolled in Penn Law, where he was active as an admissions volunteer and as a member of the South Asian Law Students Association. After graduation, he practiced law as an associate at Montgomery McCracken.
