Changes to the Academic Calendar for Fall 2013
We want to ensure that all members of the Penn community are aware of three important changes to the Academic Calendar beginning in Fall 2013.
• First, the first day of classes in the Fall 2013 semester will be August 28. This change results from the need to add days of instruction to the fall term, as explained in Almanac December 13, 2011. Penn offers a variety of resources for faculty, staff, and students who need child care options during this period:
Faculty and Staff—Penn Human Resources offers backup child and adult care through Penn’s partnership with Parents in a Pinch (www.hr.upenn.edu/myhr/worklife/family/backupcare) as well as Worklife Resources that can help with a range of dependent care challenges (www.hr.upenn.edu/myhr/worklife/workandlife/resources).
Students and Post-docs—The Family Resource Center at Penn is a hub for information, resources, activities and advocacy for students and post-docs with children, including backup child care (www.familycenter.upenn.edu/).
• Second, as a result of this shift, Fall Break will be held Thursday-Sunday (October 10-13) instead of its previous pattern of Saturday-Tuesday.
• Third, on Tuesday, November 26, classes normally scheduled for Thursday will meet; and on Wednesday, November 27, classes normally scheduled for Friday will meet. This change equalizes the number of class meetings held on each day of the week, since Fall Break and the Thanksgiving holiday will both now fall on Thursday-Friday.
These changes will continue to be in effect for future fall semesters. We thank the Penn community for helping to make these necessary transitions to a new fall calendar.
