(above) Penn Museum offers a Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Celebration with a distinctively Maya focus Saturday, November 3, from 1--4 pm. Visitors will view an imposing Day of the Dead Altar created just for the event, watch dancers from two local music and cultural groups, enjoy storytelling and traditional crafts and hear about Day of the Dead traditions and variations practiced around the world. Daedalus Quartet
(above) Music from Exile, the Daedalus Quartet with Charlie Abramovic and Randy Scarlatta will be performing on Wednesday, November 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the Penn Museum's Widener Auditorium. Music from Exile, which debuts at the Penn Humanities Forum on Violence, explores the music of composers forced into various states of exile by the Third Reich. See Music.

In the Next Room
(above) In The Next Room (Or the Vibrator Play) by Sarah Ruhl will be performed by the Theatre Arts Program on November 20-23 in Annenberg Center's Montgomery Theatre. The play is set in the genteel Victorian world of 1880’s New York, a world about to be changed utterly with the arrival of modern scientific, industrial, and electrical power. In the Next Room offers student actors, designers and audiences an unmatchable theatrical experience. Theatre Arts faculty member Dr. James F. Schlatter is directing the production. (above) Keigwin + Company will be performing at Annenberg Center's Zellerbach Theatre on November 21-23. Larry Keigwin's coreography is described by the New York Times as "a parcel of pure explosive energy mediated by impressive technical skills." His Philadelphia program will include Love Songs (2006), a series of duets that explore the various stages of love, set to music by Roy Orbison, Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone, and the tongue-in-cheel piece Girls (2013), set to a Frank Sinatra medley. Triptych (2009) and Matress Suite (2003) will also be performed. See On Stage.

(above) The Slought Foundation is pleased to present Edgelands, a series of public programs and exhibitions by artist Knut Åsdam, through November 27. Knut Åsdam utilizes film, video, sound, photography and architecture to investigate the politics of space and the boundaries of subjectivity. He is centrally concerned with place and placelessness in all of its contemporary forms, as well as experimental narrative. This program with Knut Åsdam -- Mellon Artist in Residence at the University of Pennsylvania -- features recent works, a new film and two new site-specific installations. It explores architecture and cinema at the conjunction of the personal, the paranoiac and the public. See Exhibits.

Auguste Rodin: The Human Experience

Auguste Rodin

Meditation (With Arms), a sculpture by Auguste Rodin. It was originally modeled for The Gates of Hell in 1880s, enlarged about 1896. The Musée Rodin cast 8 in 1979, Coubertin Foundry. The Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation lent the bronze sculpture to the Arthur Ross Gallery for Auguste Rodin: The Human Experience. There will be a symposium on Auguste Rodin on November 8. This exhibit continues the 30th Anniversary Celebration at the Arthur Ross Gallery. The exhibit, which features 20 bronzes, will run through December 22. Photo courtesy of Arthur Ross Gallery. (above)Silk Graffiti is a one-of-a-kind, site-specific fiber installation. With Silk Graffiti, Aubrie intuitively responds to the environment for which the work is being created, pairing particular places with thought-provoking text to facilitate a dialogue. Aubrie often works with words of significance according to whom, what, or where she is collaborating with as inspiration for the piece itself. The exhibit will be on display through December 31. (above) Visitors of all ages will be wowed by a quarter mile of track featuring seven loops and tunnels with fifteen different rail lines and two cable cars, nine bridges (including a trestle bridge you can walk under), and bustling model trains, all set in the winter garden of the Morris Arboretum. Eat, Drink, and Dance
(above) Enjoy never before heard recordings of songs and dances from the Penn Libraries sheet music collections, featuring "The Roast Beef Cantata," "Bow Wow Wow," "Oh Men What Silly Things You Are," and the "Hippopotamus Polka." The music is performed, arranged and recorded by Penn students, alumni, and staff to accompany a display of printed sheet music in honor of Penn's Year of Sound. The exhibit will be on display through January 31, 2014. See Exhibits.

Black Bodies in Propaganada

"Keep us Flying," United States, 1943. This is one of 33 posters on view in Black Bodies in Propaganda: The Art of the War Poster at the Penn Museum. The exhibition explores changing messages on race and politics through propaganda—from the American Civil War, to World War I, World War II and through to the African independence movements. In addition to the posters, the exhibition features three objects, soldier attire from Sudan, circa 1900. Additionally, interactive multimedia allows visitors to explore some of the posters' distinctive iconography, while archival military recruitment films and a related segment from PBS' "History Detectives" enrich the exhibition. Deep in the Weeds, an exhibit on display in Morris Arboretum's Upper Gallery, features the photography of Rob Cardillo, including "Itea" (above). Cardillo has professionally photographed plants, gardens and the people that tend them for more than 20 years. This permanent exhibiti at the Van Pelt-Diectrich Library is devoted to the display of John James Audubon's Birds of America (1827-38). Penn's double elephant folio set of the Birds was a gift of Edwin H. Vare, Jr. in 1957-59. The page opening from the volume on display will be changed on the second Wednesday of every month.
