Dr. Angela M. DeMichele is the inaugural chair-holder of the Jill and Alan Miller Associate Professorship in Breast Cancer Excellence at Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center. Dr. DeMichele also serves as Senior Scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. At the Abramson Cancer Center, she co-leads both the Breast Cancer Research Program and the 2-PREVENT Translational Center of Excellence, which was launched to address the high rate of relapse and late treatment effects among breast cancer survivors.
The lead donors for the chair are Jill and Alan Miller, who made the naming gift to celebrate Jill’s 20th anniversary as a breast cancer survivor. Other donors to the professorship include Steven and Courtney Kapp and Ronald Kresge.
“I am tremendously gratified that the Millers have chosen to honor Dr. DeMichele in such a personally meaningful way,” said Dr. Chi V. Dang, the John H. Glick, MD Abramson Cancer Center Director’s Professor and Director of the Abramson Cancer Center. “Endowed professorships are vital to our mission to stay at the forefront of cancer research, and I look forward to the life-saving advances the Miller chair will now make possible.”
Dr. DeMichele was a Four Schools Physician/Scientist Scholar at the Washington University School of Medicine and earned a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology from Penn. She also received her clinical training in internal medicine and hematology/oncology at Penn and joined the faculty in 2000 as a breast cancer oncologist and molecular epidemiologist.
She is a past recipient of a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, a Clinical Research Training Grant from the American Cancer Society and a Patient-Oriented Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. DeMichele has served on the Medical Oncology Subspecialty Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and is currently chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
