During the summer of 2014, the Locust Walk Class of 1949 Generational Pedestrian Bridge over 38th Street (at left) will be renovated. Key components to be addressed include: paving and waterproofing replacement, new overhead pole lighting, footpath lighting and new lighting at the Founder’s Gate signage, refurbishing the light and vine columns, removal of the concrete bench at the east bridge approach and refurbishing of the Class of 1949 Plaque and 125 Years of Women at Penn Plaque. Construction began after Commencement and will be completed by mid-August.
The poured concrete bridge was built in 1971, then renovated and inaugurated as the Class of 1949 Generational Bridge, during a ceremony on November 2, 2001 (Almanac November 13, 2001). It commemorates a proud heritage at Penn—families of Penn graduates—with inscribed pavers from loyal Pennsylvanians who paved the way for future generations.
