National Biosafety Stewardship Month: September |
|
September 16, 2014, Volume 61, No. 05 |
The National Institutes of Health and other agencies in the Department of Health and Human Services have designated September as National Biosafety Stewardship Month. Recent safety lapses in Federal labs remind us of the importance of sustaining the highest level of biosafety standards. In addition to potential risks to individuals, such events can negatively impact public support for the research that is vital to future advances in health care. The University of Pennsylvania has a suite of robust safety programs in place and an excellent safety record. We wholeheartedly endorse National Biosafety Stewardship Month, which provides an opportunity to reexamine our practices and reinforce our commitment to research safety on campus. During the months of September and October, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research will initiate activities to confirm our inventories of hazardous materials, to review our safety procedures and to update, where necessary, our training processes. We will engage existing faculty safety committees to consider related issues and invite input from the research community, as we aim to accomplish this review with minimal disruption to ongoing research. We look forward to working with you to sustain Penn’s tradition of safety in all areas of research.
—Vincent Price, Provost
