It is a group exhibition of artwork inspired by crystalswhether displayed for aesthetic purposes, used for healing powers or examined by scientists, crystals have played a key role in ancient and modern culture. Beneath the Surface: Life, Death and Gold in Ancient Panama-Penn Museum

On February 7-November 1, Beneath the Surface: Life, Death and Gold in Ancient Panama will be on display at the Penn Museum. It will include spectacular finds at the Pre-Columbian cemetery of Sitio Conte in central Panama shed light on a mysterious and complex society that thrived there more than 1,000 years ago. On February 14-March 20, Lux ex Tenebris, photography by Alexis Lerro will be on display at the Burrison Gallery. She found her niche in the study of botanical elements, patterned close ups and glowing fixtures. See Exhibits.

On March 1-July 27, Artists in the Garden: PAFA at Morris Arboretum will be on display at the Morris Arboretum with a reception on March 1 from 1-3 p.m. The exhibit will display artwork by students, alumni and faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. See Exhibits.

 

A Brand New Sculpture by Patrick Dougherty

On March 9-27, installation of A Brand New Sculpture by Patrick Dougherty will be occuring at the Morris Arboretum. Patrick Dougherty, artist-in-residence, constructs an original, site-specific stick sculpture, gaining inspiration from the garden. The exhibit opens April 5 with a grand opening on April 10 at 10 a.m. See Exhibits.

 

Representing Modern Japan:
The Luber Collection of Art Books

On March 16-June 12, Representing Modern Japan: The Luber Collection of Art Books; a multi-lingual selection of over 1,000 volumes on Japanese art, art history and culture from the pre-modern period to the 1990s-an emphasis on 20th-century Japanese printing and other art forms will be on display in the Goldstein Family Gallery, Kislak Center for Special Collections, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library. For six weeks, from January 20 through March 6, the public has the opportunity to see the best images taken through microscopes from around the world at the only venue in the Philadelphia region as part of It’s a Small, Small World: Nikon Photomicrography Competition & Exhibition at Wistar. Paul Strand—The Mexican Portfolio

Paul Strand—The Mexican Portfolio opens at Arthur Ross Gallery on January 31 and runs through March 29. Twenty images were selected by Strand and published as a portfolio in 1940, titled Photographs of Mexico, featuring photographic impressions. See Exhibits.

On February 26-April 12, Cold War, Hot Peace, works from the Real DMZ Project exploring the inner-Korean border areas will be on display at Slought. See Exhibits.

 

Institute of Contemporary Art -New Exhibits

On February 4, ICA will host a Winter 2015 Exhibitions Opening at 6 p.m.
Taking the contemporary moment in Palestine as a starting point, New York and Ramallah-based artists Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme address the eclipsing of political radicality and the search for a new political imaginary in the first US presentation of their sprawling, multi-segmented installation The Incidental Insurgents (2012–present). This exhibit will run from February 4-March 22.

Traces in the Dark, the exhibition by Deanna Bowen, Harold Mendez and Gregory Sholette asking: If we light up the traces in the dark, will we see their invisible ubiquity? Of what whole will we see? This exhibit will run from February 4-March 22.

Barbara Kasten: Stages is the first major survey of the work of the artist. Widely recognized for her photographs, since the 1970s Kasten has developed her expansive practice through the lens of many different disciplines, (above right) a piece by Barbara Kasten, Construct 32, Cibachrome, 40 x 30 inches. On March 21-April 17, Portraits and Architecture: Prints by Julie Cowan will be on display at the Burrison Gallery. She is focused on portraiture and how space affects us, invades us and defines us.The space may be manmade or outdoors. She alters a photograph during printing and, later, by adding watercolors, pencil or ink to the print. See Exhibits.

 

Modern Native Voices: The Medium of Hip Hop

On March 21, Modern Native Voices: The Medium of Hip Hop, a symposium and performance featuring Def-I, Tall Paul and Frank Waln, Native American rap and hip-hop artists will take place at the Penn Museum. See Conferences.

At Native American Voices: The People—Here and Now, a new long-term interactive exhibition at the Penn Museum, visitors will learn about contemporary issues in Native America. Set against the backdrop of more than 200 objects from the Museum’s expansive collections from the United States and Canada, the exhibition challenges stereotypes and tells powerful stories of Native American successes in achieving independence as sovereign, self-governing Nations. At multimedia stations, visitors will experience audio and video clips of contemporary Native Americans speaking of the many ways in which they maintain their religious, political, linguistic and artistic independence. This permanent exhibit at Van Pelt-Diectrich Library is devoted to the display of John James Audubon's Birds of America (1827-38). Penn's double elephant folio set of the Birds was a gift by Edwin H.
