Local Art Exhibit - Northwest Artists’ Collective
"Musings on Nature"
“Musings on Nature”, a group art exhibit by members of the Northwest Artists’ Collective (NAC), opens on Friday, June 6 at the Morris Arboretum. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, June 22 from 1-3 p.m.
The Northwest Artists’ Collective is an intentional group of over twenty painters, sculptors, print makers, photographers and fiber artists in Philadelphia’s Northwest corridor of Germantown, Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill, many of whom are inspired by nature in their work.
The Collective members are professional artists who participate in the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST) and have had extensive group exhibitions in the Philadelphia area since their inception in 2005.
The exhibit runs can be seen at the Upper Gallery of the Widener Visitor Center weekdays from 10am to 4pm; weekends 10am to 5pm; and Thursday evenings till 8:30 in June, July and August. The exhibit runs through October 20, 2008.

Arboretum provides the backdrop for this
unique opportunity to study Vinyasa (flow
style) yoga. Lead by Jennifer Schelter, we will
explore breath-taking areas of the garden and
learn the basics of yoga while absorbing the
peaceful atmosphere. Close your eyes and take
a deep breath. Inhale the sweet smell of
flowers, the warmth of an enchanted summer
night, and feel your skin aglow with the
setting sun. All are welcome, including
beginners. Please bring a mat or blanket and
wear comfortable clothes. Jennifer teaches
with a flair for humor, spirit and technical
mastery. You will gain a greater sense of your
body and how to connect to your natural
power, beauty and grace. Her teaching
promotes a deep sense of calm, revitalization
and flexibility.

Conservation Arboriculture: Care of Veteran Trees

A new school of thought has arisen in our approach to managing veteran trees. Known as conservation arboriculture, this movement is paradigm shift in the way we think about this aspect of arboriculture, and is improving our understanding of the aging tree process. Our presenters, Neville Fay of the United Kingdom and Philip van Wassenaer from Ontario, are on the forefront of conservation arboriculture, and are challenging us to think of trees in a whole new way. In one of their few appearances here in the U.S., the instructors will review the history of veteran tree care in Europe and North America, discuss biodiversity, co-evolution, and will demonstrate newly developed techniques such as natural fracture pruning and coronet cuts. The use of Picus Tomography, a non-invasive tool that uses sound waves to detect decay in trees, will be demonstrated as well. This is an opportunity not to be missed and will be valuable to anyone who cares for older trees.

Arboretum members are invited to the Annual meeting of the Advisory Board of Managers on June 18th at 9:00 a.m. at the Widener Education Center tent. Highlights of the meeting will include a year-end report and an update on the new Horticulture Center by the architects, Overland Partners. Reservations are required and space is limited.

Groovin' in the Garden - Ambler Symphony Orchestra

Morris Arboretum welcomes the Ambler Symphony Orchestra. There are over fifty musicians involved in the Orchestra under the direction of Jack Moore, conductor and music director. Jack Moore is also the Program Director of WRTI 90.1FM. The Ambler Symphony Orchestra provides cultural enrichment for the community and an opportunity for area musicians to perform.

This trip will take us to nurseryman Michael
Colibraro’s garden, located in nearby Willow
Grove. In this cosmopolitan garden that
incorporates plants from around the world
and takes advantage of every square foot, scale
is important and the imagination flourishes.
Garden rooms divide the space, and stone and
wooden details blend together with plants to
create a garden that is truly a work of art.
Michael’s garden is an extraordinary landscape
in a small space and contains many great ideas
for urban and suburban gardeners. A
highlight of the visit is a tour of the garden
with its creator, Michael Colibraro and Ken
LeRoy, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic
plantsman. Please bring your lunch to eat
in the garden. We will leave from the
Arboretum in a small bus. Park in the
meadow next to the entrance kiosk.

 Cut flowers may be a wonderful bounty from our gardens or even from the grocery store, but what do you do with them when you bring them indoors? This class will show you the many tricks of the trade to arrange flowers so that they will look their very best. You will learn techniques such as gridding and stuffing, and florist gel will be demonstrated. The elements of design will be covered in depth.
Cheryl Wilks has been a guest lecturer at the Philadelphia Flower Show since 1990, so she really knows her stuff! Please bring a box to take home your creation. All materials are provided by the instructor.
