The MBA/MB is a 2-year dual-degree program in which students earn
a Wharton Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of
Biotechnology (MB). The dual-degree requires 25 course units to be taken with 5 of them being counted toward both degrees. In the
dual-degree program, a student takes 14 courses exclusive to the Wharton MBA program and at least 9 courses specific to the Biotechnology degree. The remaning 3 courses may come from either the business, engineering, science or medical school within the constraints of the four-part curriculum:
I. 14cu - WHARTON CURRICULUM
Students in the dual degree program spend their first year in the MBA program along with the other MBA candidates starting at the same time. In their third semester, dual-degree students typically begin fulfilling the requirements of the Biotechnology Master's Degree.
II. 1cu - WHARTON COURSE/BIOTECHNOLOGY FREE ELECTIVE (to be cross-counted toward both degrees)
Many Wharton courses are worth .5 course units. When taking a .5cu course to fulfill a requirement, please remain mindful of the overall number of course units required for the degrees, as you will need to take additional courses to fulfill the credit unit requirements for graduation.
III. 4cu - ELECTIVES (to be cross-counted toward both degrees )
At least three (3) course must be Advanced Electives (approved technical electives), 500 level courses and higher from the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), or the School of Medicine (SOM/MED). No more than one (1) Biotechnology Management Elective which can come from a select set of courses in the afore mentioned schools but in areas such as history, philosophy, entrepreneurship, health care management, etc.
IV. 6cu - BIOTECHNOLOGY CORE REQUIREMENTS
The Biotechnology core exists for both the dual degree students as well as the students enrolled only in the Biotechnology Master's Program. The core consists of courses in the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Statistics. There is also a laboratory requirement.
