MBA/MB Dual-Degree Program: FAQs
I am a student at Wharton (or have just been accepted),
how do I apply for the dual-degree with the Master of Biotechnology
(MB) program?
Students who have applied to the Wharton MBA program (regardless of whether or not they have been accepted) can contact the MBA admissions office and request that transcripts be forward to the SEAS Graduate Admissions office. If desired, recommendations can also be transferred internally. Applicants must still fill out the online MB application.
I am a prospective applicant to the dual-degree program.
Can I apply to the Biotech program first?
Yes, but you will need to apply to Wharton's MBA program and be
accepted to enter into the Management track/dual-degree program.
We recommend that applicants first apply to Wharton if their interest
is solely in the dual-degree.
Can I still apply to the Biotech program if I do not get
accepted into the MBA program? Is there a management track/concentration
separate from the dual-degree program where I can take Wharton courses?
Yes, an applicant can still apply to the Biotech program. The complete
application would be required rather than the dual-degree "short"
application. The management track/concentration is only an option
for the dual-degree candidates.
What are the admissions requirements for Wharton's MBA?
Taken from Wharton's MBA Admissions site:
1. Completion of an undergraduate program at an accredited U.S.
college or its equivalent in another country.
2. Results of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). (There
is no minimum GMAT score.)
3. Results of the TOEFL test, if your native language is not English
or if you did not complete a degree program in which English was
the language of instruction.
4. Completion of the Wharton application.
Prior study in business and economics is not a requirement for admission.
We do, however, encourage those applicants that have not had college
level calculus, to take a class in this area before beginning the
MBA program.

What are the additional admissions requirements for the
Biotechnology Program?
The Master of Biotechnology program is looking for students with
the additional prerequisites:
· An undergraduate course in Molecular Biology (Penn's course
Biol 221 or equivalent) and a year of college-level calculus. (Course
descriptions available at: http://www.upenn.edu/registrar/register/)
Can I apply if I do not meet the requirements for the Biotechnology
Program?
Depending on your qualifications, most likely the answer is "Yes".
Since Penn offers Molecular Biology you may take this course prior
to enrolling in the graduate level Biotechnology courses. Self-study
is also an option. The Biotechnology Office may be able to recommend
texts.
How long does it take for the Application Review Committee
to reach a decision on my application to the Biotechnology Program?
Once we receive both your short application and your Wharton application
materials, decisions are generally processed within 30-60 days (though
often much faster). Decision notices are mailed from the Graduate
Admissions Office for the School of Engineering and Applied Science
(SEAS). Unfortunately we are unable to disclose admissions decisions
by phone or email.
What is the tuition breakdown for the dual-degree?
Wharton will bill for the first three terms of your dual-degree
program. Any additional terms you require to fulfill your Biotechnology
requirements will be billed at Graduate Engineering tuition. Graduate
Engineering tuition for the current academic semester can be found
here.
Wharton's tuition can be found on their Financial Aid page:
http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/admissions/financial_aid.html
How long will it take me to finish the dual-degree? Is
there a part-time option?
The dual-degree MBA/MB can be completed in two to two and half years
full-time, depending on the student and past academic work. An example
of the course load:
Summer * 3 courses May to Aug
Year I 11 courses Sept to May
Summer 2 Internship May to Aug
Year II 11 courses Sept to May
*Can be completed after Year II if matriculating in the Fall term.
The dual-degree program currently does not offer part-time study
since the MBA program is full-time. The Master of Biotechnology
program can be completed on a part-time basis, however.
