MBA/MB Dual-Degree Program: FAQs

I am a student at Wharton (or have just been accepted), how do I apply for the dual-degree with the Master of Biotechnology (MB) program?

Applicants must still fill out the online MB application. Students who have applied to the Wharton MBA program (regardless of whether or not they have been accepted) can contact the MBA admissions office and request that transcripts be forward to the SEAS Graduate Admissions office. If desired, recommendations can also be transferred internally.

I am a prospective applicant to the dual-degree program. Can I apply to the Biotech program first?

Wharton's MBA begins only in the Fall and has a much earlier application deadline. Since Wharton's first round of admissions begins in the Fall and the Biotech deadline isn't until June 1, we recommend that if you aren't going to be submitting your appklications around the same time, you should start with Wharton. But, yes, it is possible to apply to Biotech first if circumstances make that a better option for you.

Can I still apply to the Biotech program if I do not get accepted into the MBA program? Is there a management track/concentration separate from the dual-degree program where I can take Wharton courses?

An applicant can apply to the Biotech program, even if not admitted to Wharton. No, there is no management track/concentration separate from the dual-degree program. Biotech students may take a maximum of one Wharton course as one of their core requirements.

What are the admissions requirements for Wharton's MBA?

Details on Wharton's admissions process and requirements can best be found on their website:
http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/admissions/index.cfm

What are the additional admissions requirements for the Biotechnology Program?

The Biotechnology Program requirements for students intending to enroll in the dual degree program are the same as those who are not. As far as pre-requisites, applicants should have had at least a year of college level calculus.

How long does it take for the Application Review Committee to reach a decision on my application to the Biotechnology Program?

Decisions for the MB program are generally processed within 4 - 6 weeks. You will receive notification by email when your decision is available and you can log into your application account to view & respond to it.

What is the tuition breakdown for the dual-degree?

Wharton will bill for the first three terms of your dual-degree program. Any additional terms you require to fulfill your Biotechnology requirements will be billed at Graduate Engineering tuition. Additional Penn Engineering tuition information can be found here.

Wharton's tuition can be found on their website:
http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/admissions/financing-your-mba.cfm

How long will it take me to finish the dual-degree? Is there a part-time option?

The dual-degree MBA/MB can be completed in two to two and half years full-time, depending on the student. An example of the course load:
Summer * 3 courses May to Aug
Year I 11 courses Sept to May
Summer 2 Internship May to Aug
Year II 11 courses Sept to May

*Can be completed after Year II if matriculating in the Fall term.

The MBA program is full-time only, but once completed, any outstanding biotechnology courses can be fulfilled on a part-time basis.
