Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Clinical Research Fellowship
The University of Pennsylvania is highly committed to the training of future physician scientists in the areas of patient oriented research, clinical epidemiology and health services research. The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Clinical Research Fellowship (CRF) at Penn is a key component of this mission. The CRF at Penn is a year-long structured experience for medical students interested in conducting clinical research, including studies in patient-oriented and translational research, clinical epidemiology and health services research. Students are selected among a competitive pool of internal Penn candidates and external candidates from a diverse set of medical schools. Program leadership works closely with Fellows to identify appropriate mentors and year-long clinical research projects.
The CRF at Penn includes research opportunities on the Penn campus in Philadelphia and at the Penn medical program in Botswana, Africa. The year is structured to assure that students have some experience in all aspects of clinical research, from proposal development, to the fielding of the study and data collection, to data cleaning and analysis, through dissemination of results. In addition, Fellows complete courses in clinical study design and data analysis and participate in a monthly journal club and research presentations with the Program Leaders. Our program is guided by the belief that early, positive mentoring experiences can have a major impact on the career trajectories of students in this program. The identification of mentors whose careers serve as models for students is a key element of the longer range program goal to develop future physician scientists.
