Study/Travel Experience

Placement Preference

Please select ONE internship activity for the list below.

Health Policy and Manpower: One internship position will be offered to a student in any undergraduate school at Penn to work under the direction of Howard Moffat, MD in the Ministry of Health whose department assesses compliance with Ministry of Health regulations in Botswana.

Veterinary Medicine: Two internship positions will be offered to a Penn Veterinary student to either work in a private veterinary clinic in Gaborone, or to work at the Botswana Agricultural College with individuals interested in the cattle industry in Botswana.

Archeology/Anthropology: One internship position will be offered to an undergraduate or graduate student to work collaboratively with the Penn Museum and the National Museum in Botswana to search the Botswana Museum database for ethnographic collections and utilize the photo archives to identify objects related to health and healing for possible inclusion in an upcoming exhibit at Penn.

Education: One internship position will be offered to an undergraduate interested in preschool and early childhood education to work in an orphanage/daycare program in Botswana.

Law: One internship position will be offered to a law student to work under the direction of the Attorney General in Botswana.

Industry and the Environment: One internship position will be offered to an undergraduate student to work at the Botswana Gas Company to assess the environmental impact of the first gas field to be found in Botswana.

Business: One internship position will be offered to a Wharton Huntsman student to work on a project in Botswana. Discussions are in progress between the Huntsman Program and the Office of International Programs at the University of Botswana to design the curriculum.

Personal Statement

Please write an essay of 500 words on a separate sheet of paper explaining why you are interested in participating in an internship program in Botswana, and what you hope to accomplish. Also describe how this internship relates to your academic purpose. You may include your interests (intellectual, social and other), personal achievements, and future aspirations.

Additional Materials

In addition to your personal statement and recommendations, please also attach to this application:

➢ Your CV or resume including your prior work experience, education and relevant coursework, volunteer experience, honors/awards and publications, and relevant computer skills;

➢ Copies of your Penn transcripts, including study abroad (official stamp on documents not required).
